How do I know my elevator needs a safety inspection now?

If you cannot find a valid safety certificate in the building's files, or the certificate you have has expired, the elevator needs an inspection. Owners often discover this only when dealing with the competent authority or when a complaint is directed at them, not before.

What documents should I prepare before the inspection?

Bring the elevator maintenance record and any previous certificates, along with a document that proves ownership or management of the building. The absence of a maintenance record delays the inspection because the competent authority relies on it to judge whether periodic maintenance has been followed.

What should I expect after the inspection is done?

After the inspection it becomes clear whether any parts need repair before the certificate is issued. A certificate is not issued automatically when there are findings: it waits until they are resolved. So plan to have the main parts in serviceable condition before the inspection date.

What is the difference between a periodic elevator inspection and the permit to operate it?

The periodic elevator inspection is a technical process in which the inspector checks the condition of the parts and records the findings. The operating permit is the formal procedure with the competent authority that allows the elevator to run. An inspection is usually a condition of obtaining the permit, but a building may need one independently of the other.

Does the inspection differ depending on the elevator type or age?

Yes, a hydraulic elevator requires the oil system and the cylinder to be inspected in addition to the shared parts. An older elevator may also require parts to be checked that are not examined in a newer one, because safety standards have developed and some older systems operate outside the range that is now acceptable.
