Many building owners assume any elevator can serve accessibility needs with a small adjustment, but a narrow cabin or a narrow door cannot be fixed after installation. What is decided early is the load, the shaft dimensions and the door width, and all three are constrained by the space the building already has.

How do I know my building needs an accessibility elevator rather than a standard one?

If the user relies on a wheelchair or needs more room to enter and exit, a standard elevator cabin is often too narrow for that. The main differences are the cabin dimensions, the door width and the height of the control panel, and none of these can be added after installation.

What should I prepare in the building before ordering an accessibility elevator?

Make sure you know the available opening dimensions on every floor and the depth of the pit if there is one. If the building is already standing, check the space in front of the opening on every floor because a wheelchair needs room to manoeuvre outside the cabin too.

What should I check after installation and before the elevator is used by people with accessibility needs?

Check that the door on every floor opens to its full width without obstruction, and that the cabin buttons are reachable from wheelchair height. Check that the cabin floor is level with the landing threshold on every floor, because even a small gap can catch a wheel.

What decides whether I need an accessibility elevator or an elderly-access elevator?

An elderly-access elevator focuses on comfort and stability when entering and leaving, while an accessibility elevator is built around wheelchair dimensions and freedom of movement inside the cabin. Can an existing standard elevator be converted to suit people with accessibility needs?

Partial conversion is possible: lowering the control panel and adding a grab rail inside the cabin are both workable steps. But if the cabin is too narrow or the door does not pass a wheelchair, the real solution is replacing the elevator or choosing a different position in the building. Tell us about your current elevator and we agree what can be done.
