A standard elevator was not designed for them
The standard settings on a regular elevator assume a user who moves at an average pace, reads the buttons clearly and crosses the door in seconds. An older person needs more time at every one of those moments. The issue is not only the cabin size: it is the operator settings, the panel height and the lighting at the threshold.
