How do I know my building needs a passenger elevator and not a different type?

A passenger elevator is built to carry people in multi-floor buildings, whether residential, commercial or office. If the building receives a number of people daily across several floors, a passenger elevator is the main choice. If the need is to move heavy goods or to serve a private home, there are dedicated types for each situation, including Goods & freight elevators and Home & villa elevators.

What information should I prepare before we agree on the specification?

Tell us the number of floors the elevator will serve, the number of people expected to use it daily, and the shaft dimensions if the shaft is already built. If the building is under construction, it helps to delay building the shaft until we agree together on the cabin and door specification it needs to match.

What changes in the installation between a commercial and a residential building?

In a commercial building the operating cycles are higher, so a machine that handles that load is chosen along with doors with a stronger operator. In a residential building use is quieter and the cabin may be smaller. The difference shows not only in appearance but in the internal components that are rated for heavy or light use.

What should I check in a passenger elevator after installation and before daily use?

Check that the cabin stops level with the floor at every landing with no gap that could cause a stumble. Open the door at each floor and confirm the elevator does not move while the door is open. Press every button in the cabin and make sure each one responds. Listen for any unusual sound from the machine or the guides during movement.

Common mistake: can the shaft be built first and the elevator chosen afterwards?

This is a mistake that recurs in buildings under construction. The shaft dimensions, the depth, the width and the height, are set by the cabin type, its load and the door type. If the shaft is built to dimensions that do not match, the cabin you want may not fit and wide alterations to the shaft may be required. The right approach is to agree on the elevator first, then build the shaft to its specification.
