A fault does not always give warning
Many elevator faults are not preceded by sounds or noticeable vibration. The machine runs until the bearings break, and the rope wears gradually until it falls below the minimum tension required. Waiting for a fault means paying for the stoppage and the replacement together, instead of paying only for the inspection.
